Reading Promise Week

Reading Promise Week is Philly’s annual family literacy festival.

This is a festival on a mission. Since 2020, community leaders across Philly have joined together to host a week-long celebration of reading—bringing free literacy events, books, and resources to families across the city. Our goal is to increase access to quality reading materials, highlight local resources, help build positive home literacy habits, and address the early literacy crisis through community strengths and joy.

We strive for all events to model and share specific information, resources, and activities known to increase the skills necessary for children to become strong readers.

IMPACT REPORT
In 2023, partners held 74 events and distributed 17,332 children’s books.

While Read by 4th staff provides backend support, Reading Promise Week is driven by the community, for the community. Neighborhood leaders, non-profits, civil servants, volunteers, librarians, and of course, Philly’s Reading Captains answer the call to organize and deliver free family events to support our next generation of readers.
